What do you love about fall? Share in the comments!

1. McMenamin’s Grand Lodge Hotel – The Grand Lodge is about a 45 minute drive from Portland, in Forest Grove. Like all the McMenamin’s hotels, there’s a lot of history surrounding the place — The Grand Lodge use to be a Masonic convalescent home. It might sound a little creepy, but it’s totally not! It’s a perfect (quick) weekend getaway from Portland, and way more fun with a group. We spent the day playing disc golf, hurling bocce balls around the grounds, drinking at the outdoor pub and snacking on our farmer’s market haul, attempted to watch a movie (which broke! That’s what happens when you try to watch a Vin Diesel movie), lounged about the soaking pool, and played pool. A giggle-worthy and great weekend.

2.Playing bocce – I joined a bocce league — it’s super low-key.


3. 4th of July weekend: Waterfront Blues Fest, biking around, fireworks on the Eastbank Esplanade, and I made a cherry tart. America! F$@% yeah!


4. event planning @ Ace Hotel – finalized our Meet, Plan, Go! Portland venue for Oct 18. Woo!

5. first tomatoes from garden – golden, cherry, and early girl <3 gardening

6. working at Barista & Crema – I spent quite a few afternoons this month at Crema and Barista with an iced coffee, sunshine, and fresh air — the perfect antidote for post-lunch food coma.

7. Oregon coast – I never tire of visiting Oswald West State Park. It’s my favorite totally-not-a-secret Oregon beach that always seems to still be secret enough to have a little area to yourself. Trumps Cannon Beach.

8. Rose gardens – summer has been lagging a bit this year, so during an early July visit to the Rose Gardens, roses were still in full bloom. Gorgeous.



9. Fountains & biking – <3 biking and all the fountains around town.

10. Macarons! My favorite Macarons in Portland are from Two Tarts Bakery. So while at Little Bird a couple weeks ago, I thought it was adorable that they give you a mini macaron with your bill. On the way out, I noticed this tray of macarons. Too cute.

2. an impromptu cocktail crawl to Beaker & Flask, Veritable Quandary, and Central. (not as a cheap as a pub crawl fyi, ouch.)

3. I found this delightful, blue tank at Anthropologie. I like to think I look a tad bit happier with my new shirt, than this gal here is.

4. Vancouver for TBEX! My first time back to Vancouver since I was a little one. I didn’t get to see much of the city on my trip, so definitely on my list to revisit soon. I have more food carts to explore. Japadog was quite tasty. (It was also really fun seeing the excited crowds of Canucks fan after game 5 before the Bruins riots debacle happened.).

5. Camping at Nehalem Bay. We got rained out, but it was gorgeous on the Friday we arrived, and still one of my favorite campgrounds on the Oregon coast.

6. Gorgeous Portland sunsets. I caught this one from the Hawthorne Bridge, biking home on summer solstice.

7. Turning 30! Celebrating at Pix & I got a Public bikes basket for my birthday :)

8. new haircut. I look like my mom in the 70s.

9. Pedalpalooza. My first year participating in the Pedalpalooza fun, and Bike Noir was the coolest mystery theater/theater by bike/group ride… like evah!

10. Cooking - a combo of the farmer’s market and sunshine had me cooking a bit more last month. It was fun to pull out a few of my summer staples, like Tuna Nicoise sandwiches, and my favorite super fresh salad: lime, avocado, corn, and tomato salad.

What’s been making you happy lately?

1. Fleet Foxes! Really, really, really good live.

2. Picking out my garden at Portland Nursery – yay for tomatoes! {I have no photographic evidence of this}

3. Cotton Jones at Doug Fir. There aren’t words… so here’s a song.

4. San Juan Islands. We’ve already discussed my love of biking around on the San Juans.

5. Shark sheets… yep, I bought them. I’m ready for Shark Week!

6. I <3 my city. And speaking of, I’m writing our Portland travel guide for work now, WhyGo Portland. So go like me on the the Book of Face, and I promise to provide you with photos and anecdotes of my lovely city (and the randomness that comes with it).

7. Vermont Cheddar & Fuji Apple Cheese Plate @ Clarklewis = just about my favorite happy hour in PDX.

8. Putting an Ayn Rand quote on the TBEX postcard I designed for work. Winning.

9. Veggie burger w/chevre at Little Big Burger. Very much like this little snack still. Small enough to not give you food coma… but yes, you’ll also be hungry in a couple hours.

What are you happy about?

1. Maui! Maui! Maui! I finally managed to get back to lovely Hawaii. Even though it’s so cheap to get to Hawaii from the west coast, my first trip was in 2007, when I went to Oahu for 5 days, so I was excited to visit another island. I’ve only ever heard amazing things about Maui, well other than the prices. After months of dreary Portland, I was more than ready for 10 days of sunshine — especially when I realized, upon arrival at Kahului, that I had forgotten what warm air feels like. Snorkeling, swimming, laying out, driving around the island, hiking, finding an “infinity” pool to swim in while hiking, stand up paddleboarding, Foodspotting up a storm from amazing restaurants… le sigh… I think I need to winter in Maui next year. Hawaii $795.43

2. Oregon Coast Essa drove us home from the coast a few weeks ago. No Zipcars were harmed in this photo.

3. Airbnb So I tested out the Airbnb waters while I was on vacation — both offering my place up as a host and trying as a traveler. How’d it go? Hosting turned out great! I had 2 guests and my place was filled 8 of the 10 days I was on vacation. The best part? It paid for 1/2 my trip! I’ll definitely be renting out my space whenever I go on vacation now. <3 Airbnb! The bad news? After finding a lovely[looking] Airbnb place in hippy-tastic Paia, we decided to go with the flow and pay when we arrived instead of booking on Airbnb. And turns out this place is riddled with Cane spiders (Google it, I’ll wait). Ewwwww, right? So after returning “home” after one of my favorite days — driving the Hana Highway — the spiders descended upon the house. I’m being only slightly dramatic… after a killing spree of 6 cane spiders, and several bloodcurdling screams by one BFF, we all decided it was time to go elsewhere. Yes, I get that they’re harmless, but I’m not thinking about the harmful part, when I find a 5 inch spider in my bed. Unfortunately since we didn’t book through Airbnb or pay by credit card, we have no recourse to post a negative review on Airbnb, which is upsetting. Onward! Airbnb

4. Bike date to Fenouil Let’s talk about my bike more! I went on my very first bike date in March, and I’ve decided biking is the best way to go on a date. The plan was to double date at Fenouil, and we just happened to catch it on their last weekend. As I mentioned in my last new restaurants post, I just discovered Fenouil, and their fabulous happy hour in March, so I’m sad to see it closed! Anyway, since I was meeting everyone there, I rode along Waterfront Park, and under the Steel Bridge, before happening upon the most lovely bike ride going the opposite direction. I forgot it was Portland’s bi-annual Tweed Ride and was tempted to turn around and go a-riding with them, especially with their waves and calls of “Come with us!” Needless to say I was the last to arrive at Fenouil. BFF and I had the cheese tart and cheese plate and well… everything on the menu with cheese, while the guys had burgers and pot au feu. After dinner, handsome boyfriend (yes, still trying to decide what to refer to him as on my blog) and I rode through the Pearl district, up Waterfront Park and stopped to take pictures of the cherry blossoms and my new bike and the river and then rode over the Steel bridge to the East side. Riding my bike reminds me how much I love my city. Fenouil $12ish

5. Hanami! After thinking the cherry blossoms would never arrive, they finally came! I enjoyed seeing them in pockets of downtown, Waterfront park, visiting the Japanese Gardens, and happening upon the surprise hidden streets covered on both sides with cherry trees… where you ride down the street and say “oooooh! so pretty!” the entire time. Waterfront Park $free!

6. Star Noodle in Maui I fell in love with a restaurant while in Maui. Hello Vietnamese crepe! And the pad thai, and the malasadas… Brilliant. We loved this place so much that we came back for lunch a few days later. Star Noodle $20-ish

7. Biking around the Willamette Hey let’s talk about biking again! A couple weekends ago, we biked down the Eastbank Esplanade to Sellwood, had gelato at Staccato Gelato in Sellwood, rode over the Sellwood Bridge, along the river and back to downtown. Almost a complete circle, and such a nice day for a ride. Staccato Gelato $3.50

8. Make it Pop @ Ace Hotel Cleaners Handsome boyfriend took me to the PDX Pop Now! benefit at the Ace Hotel. Good music and tasty food — asparagus soup and amazing deviled eggs from Beast (how many deviled eggs I ate = a secret!), ice cream from Fifty Licks, and cupcakes from somewhere. Yes, the music was good too. PDX Pop Now! $35

9. Portland Cheers to Belgium Beers After a morning of lazing around at the Farmer’s Market (tasty macaron alert!), we headed over to the Portland Cheers to Belgium Beers Festival. I’m fairly certain 95% of the people there arrived by bike. Thankfully, they allowed bike parking in the fenced in area, and we were able to find a spot to lock our bikes together by the row of Honey Buckets :) Anyway, I’m not the biggest Belgium Beer fan, but it was fun trying different ones (and I’m a little more tolerant of Belgian beer now — I found a few less sweet ones, but I’m still firmly rooted in the IPA camp). It’s always fun to spend a day in the sunshine with friends! PCTBB $15

10. Red flats & skinny jeans Loving my new Seychelles coral red flats and H&M dark skinny jeans. I went shopping for the first time in ages. Lie. Shopping occurred sometime in January or February, but it’s been too cold to wear them, so I’m finally getting to enjoy those red flats I found at Nordstrom Rack. Rack $25

What are you happy about?

1. Portland Farmers Market opening – It’s been a long winter, so March 19 was like Christmas morning! I’m excited to have the PSU Farmer’s Market back open — it’s one of my favorite Saturday morning routines during the summer. While there wasn’t as much produce available as later in the season, I still ended up spending all my cash, and headed home with: jonagold apples, carrots, havarti from Willamette Valley Cheese Co (a fav!), ciabatta from Pearl Bakery, a honey stick, and Dave’s killer bread. And the chard was the most beautiful colors! We followed our Farmer’s Market visit with a drive up to Council Crest, which turned into an impromptu hike to OHSU, took the tram down to the South Waterfront Zipcar, drove to Council Crest to get the car, dropped off the Zipcar and then filled up on my favorite sandwich at Bunk Bar. 2. My new bike! – I’ve already rambled on and on about my lovely new bike. Swoon. bikesdirect $349



3. Bar Method – I’ve tried Bar Method a few times at Lululemon and once at their studio. It’s a brilliant workout and a lot of fun, but the drop-in prices aren’t something I want to add to my budget (example: at $22 a class, that’s like buying 15 classes instead of my previously mentioned lovely bicycle). So I was excited to that they were at Lululemon 1x/week for the month of March. I couldn’t ask for a better price :) bar method $free
4. The Oatmeal at Powells – The Oatmeal comics are a major part of my lol folder in Google Reader. It was fun to catch his quick talk at Powell’s while he was on his way through town promoting his new book, 5 Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth. Fun to hear the backstory on a few of the comics, his inspiration, and random silliness. powell’s $free
5. Dandy Warhols at University Chapel – I snagged tickets to all three of Hotpot PDX’s Best Ever Shows series, and made it to two. The Dandy’s tickets were by far the most elusive, but such a fun show and a really chill space (nothing like listening to ‘Heroin is So Passe’ in an old church). That Courtney Taylor-Taylor… so naughty.
6. Happy hour at Ping – After being sick off and on for a few weeks, it was fun to finally be out of “recovery” mode and spend a lazy Saturday, happy hour-ing at Ping with coworker Jessica and recent Portland transplants Kate, Patty, Ryan (but minus Doniree & Chris who got sidetracked with a Zipcar and the Oregon coast… something I’m a little too familiar with!).  ping $15-ish
7. Foodportunity – I won two passes to Foodportunity from Eater PDX last month. It was a nice diversion to stop by, chat to local chefs, and snag some tasty bites. A fav was the white bean radicchio with octopus from Beaker & Flask. foodportunity $free to me :)



8. Mini dinner party for 4 – I’ve been in my new place for almost a year now and had yet to cook for more than 2 people! So I made my favorite lentil soup, and served it with bread and Brie. Success!
9. Liam Finn @ Doug Fir – I don’t remember when I first starting listening to Liam Finn… probably off Pandora, but I love his sound, so when I saw on the Doug Fir list that he was going to be here in March, I got a little giddy and put it on my calendar. Those kiwis. :) I took a few short videos with my iPhone, but this one is the whole song, Second Chance. doug fir $12
10. IKEA kitchen cart thing – I love, love, love my kitchen, but if I could change one thing, I would request more counter space. When I’m cooking more than one thing at a time, I start precariously stacking things everywhere: counter, cupboards, table… this combined with my love for kitchen gadgets, and I run out of space quick. So I decided to add to my disturbingly large IKEA collection with the super cheap BEKVÄM kitchen cart. ikea $60

What’s been making you happy lately?

One of the perks of working for an independent budget travel company, is that after chatting about Iceland to a coworker who writes our Iceland travel guide, you might see your very own custom 5-day Iceland itinerary pop up in your RSS reader a week or two later. Thanks Katie! :) So without further ado here are…

10 things I loved about my trip to Iceland:

#1. Icelandic ponies horsies

Ever since I saw pictures of the uber-adorable Icelandic horses, I knew I would be riding horses while in Iceland. They’re like life-size My Little Pony dolls, and they tölt. If I was a horse, I would totally be one of these little hearty creatures. Yeah, I identify with Icelandic horses… le sigh…

#2. Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon exceeded my expectations. I’d heard more than a few times that the Blue Lagoon was a little over-rated and expensive, but was looking forward to it anyway. Visiting the Blue Lagoon was one of my favorite things in Iceland. With 6 hours of daylight and freezing temperatures, it was fun to bliss out in the lagoon for a few hours. Highly recommended.

#3. Meandering about Reykjavik

Reykjavik looks like a tiny toy town from the Hallgrímskirkja church tower. The downtown area is a walker’s paradise. After a day of wandering, I felt like I pretty much knew my way around, and I had a great time just meandering about town during the 5 days… poking into shops, visiting the Sun Voyager sculpture, getting lattes (my favorite cafe for lattes was a tiny little place called Grái Kötturinn — Grey Kitten? I’m assuming), window shopping at 66 North, popping into a design shop or two…

#4. Brewery tour & duty-free alcohol

I hadn’t really thought of doing a brewery tour in Iceland until I heard about it from my coworker. It ended up being a lot of fun to hear about the history of drinking in Iceland, quite a few drinks were included, and we got drink vouchers to use back in town for $5 beers instead of $9 (yes, $9!). And one of my favorite Iceland tips: if you’re going to have at least a few drinks while in Iceland, stop at duty free in the airport and snag your drink of choice. Alcohol and the tax on alcohol is very expensive in Iceland.

#5. Seeing the last 3 songs of a random Icelandic band

I love catching local (or not so local) music while I’m traveling. So after hearing a band playing while walking down the street, we wandered into a pub for the last few songs. I have no idea who it was or what the pub was called. A fun mystery. :)

#6. Golden Circle – Golfus & Geysir

After considering renting a car and driving the Golden Circle, we decided to take the easier and cheaper route and take a half-day tour. I think we picked the coldest day of our trip too, as apparent by the cold cringe in a few of my pictures. It was fun to get out of Reykjavik again and into the outdoors, and really made me want to return in summer.

#7. Frozen pond sliding

We stayed near the pond in Reykjavik, and noticed people ice skating and playing on the ice, so after a few days of walking past the pond, we stopped for some fun. I’m tempted to post a brilliant video of someone falling on the ice, perhaps another time…

#8. Bæjarins beztu pylsur (hot dog stand)

Hey remember that time I ate a tarantula in Cambodia? Yep, all bets are off when I travel (Lie. Sometimes true at home as well). Although I consider myself a pescatarian, I’m not dogmatic about it, and I’ll try almost anything once, because life is short — and really it’s more fun to eat strange things while traveling! Back to Iceland… and hotdogs — one of their most popular dishes, Bæjarins beztu pylsur is Reykjavik’s most famous hotdog stand. I got one “with everything” and loved the fried onions, mustard sauce, and remolaði. Tasty. So you probably won’t find me snagging a 99-cent hotdog at IKEA, but it was fun to check out Iceland’s most popular dish. Baaaah!

#9. $$$ dinner

Although I consider myself a budget traveler, I like to splurge every once in a while on a trip. We decided on Fiskmarkadurinn (Fish Market) and it didn’t disappoint.

#10. Skyr

Skyr is like Greek yoghurt on crack. It was the first and last thing I ate in Iceland. I’ll probably be hitting up Whole Foods way too often for my Skyr fix.

I’m sure I’m forgetting to mention something else epic that I love about Iceland, but for now this is my <3 list. And I can’t wait to go back in summer! Or maybe go to Iceland Airwaves!  2012, anyone?

1. MacBook Aaaaaair - My laptop broke last month (can we blame my lack of blogging on that? Ok, good) My sweet little Dell 710m was a trusty little lappie for almost 5 years! So after comparing newer Dells and Macs, I ended up deciding on the Air. Reason #1: It’s tiny and cute like a netbook, but still has just enough of the necessary laptop features. #2 (heh): Price. I thought about getting a Pro, but a basic Pro (same price range) is kind of the worst of both worlds. #3: this will make my occasional “work from a coffee shop” time so much easier since it’s super-light and starts up in oh 1/2 a second. I’m officially back to the dark side. The iPhone = gateway drug.apple $1299

2. Old-school FAIL – Classic Home Shopping network ladder fail, from Fail blog. It’s one of my YouTube favorites, and I still can’t stop watching it… “Actually I didn’t have it locked… it is very safe to operate…” youtube

3. Things Organized Neatly – I came across this tumblr via Swissmiss a few months ago, and still take a peak every few days. It reminds me of the scene in Amelie where her mother cleans out her purse. thingsorganizedneatly

4. New places to eat and/or drink around Portland – I love trying new restaurants… I managed to tear myself away from my favorites go out too much this month… new places I would return to: Tabla, Muu-Muu’s, Night Light Lounge, Cabezon, Red Flag (this place cracks me up), and Broder… Mock all you want, but Foursquare is amazing for cataloging everywhere you’ve wandered into each month. Place I really want to try next: Secret Society. foursquare

5. The Shining @ Bagdad Theater – Groupon had a free Secret Screening event at The Bagdad. I knew buying too many Groupons would pay off eventually! Anyway, it was sufficiently fun… plus free beer and the movie was not as scary as I remembered it being 10 years ago. Bagdad Theater free

6. Gifting – You know when you find something that someone would absolutely love, and it’s so “them” that it’s just kind of automatic to snag it for them? Makes me happy. Excited for Christmas. :)

7. Mad Men – Yes, I know. I’m about 4 years late to the Mad Men party. Everyone has been telling me I would love Mad Men since oh, their first season. I finally checked out the first 3 episodes on Netflix and was [obviously] hooked. Thankfully I have about five months of dreary weather to catch up on Mad Men. netflix $eriously, why only 3 episodes on 1 DVD, Netflix? Why$

8. Betsey Johnson tights – To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of Betsey Johnson anything. Too pink, too over the top, too gaudi. And then I ran across a 4-pack of tights (grey, grey, argyle, and black textured) in a Rue La La sample sale for Target-ish prices. Anyway, I’m a huge fan! I’ll still be giggling and/or cringing at most of their products, but the tights I love. ruelala $25

9. The XX – I got a few free songs of The XX earlier this year, and added to my Pandora station, and I’m still kind of obsessed with them. amazon $6.99

10. Portland, rain, pretty leaves… – I took this pic from the tram up to OHSU. Another reminder of why I love Portland and fall. :)

What’s on your list?

1. biking – I’ve been biking up a storm this month. Other than the streetcar, it’s my main mode of transportation, along with the occasional Zipcar. Anyway, I have such a crush on this bicycle. I want. Dear Savings account, can I use some of my first-time homebuyer tax credit for this? Public D3 $690

2. yoga – I started my 30 day yoga challenge a couple of weeks ago, and then took a 4 day hamstring break after my first ever Bikram (hot) yoga class. Intense! So I’m back on track now — 10 days in (6 days/week), 20 to go! Watch out.

3. iPhone 4 – get over it, yeah?  As mentioned… LOVE! How did I survive without one? :P And the daily food photos continue. My only complaint is that it’s not that great as an actual phone, not that I actually use it for the phone aspect too much.

4. Hobo International Clover Wristlet – I’ve been wanting a clutch (wristlet, whatever you want to call it) for a while now. However, most of them seem to be the size of binders, so I’m loving this smaller, vintage-y one that I found at Rue by Hobo. rue la la invite

5. Pastis – One of my favorite summer drinks. Water + pastis. It’s like being in Marseilles again!

6. Scheming. Dreaming. Iceland. $458 Seattle to Reykjavík. (waving goodbye to getting a new bike). Iceland: Sigur Ros, blue lagoon, Icelandic ponies, Eyjafjallajökull volcano… cannot wait! Also, I’m pretty sure that I’ll have a chance meeting with one of the lovely gentleman of Sigur Ros: fall in love, live happily ever after in Iceland, and have like 1,000,000 Icelandic babies. Yep.

7. Google Docs – humor me in my Google fangirl moments. So they’ve had tons of new changes lately, enough for me to quit my whinging about how all the Excel formulas that I’m used to aren’t working, and you can copy tabs to a new doc now, and rumors are circulating that you’ll soon be able to login to more than 1 Google Account in 1 browser. I think I’m a little bit, a little bit in love with Google.

8. Ice cream sandwiches – I tried out the Martha Stewart recipe for classic ice cream sandwiches. Tasty. I’ve also been a little obsessed with the coconut ice cream bars by Paleteria La Michoacana from the dreaded land of Costco.

9. Lululemon yoga pants – I finally bought a pair of Lululemon pants. Half of me is annoyed with Lululemon for being so damn expensive, but they are incredibly comfy shorts and after I got my first-time home buyer credit, I decided it was kosher to spend 1% (eek!) on some sweet ass pants. I also really love their company and they have free yoga classes in-store twice a week. :) Lululemon Astro Crop

1. Liberty of London – Remember when I went overboard on buying Liberty of London stuff? Yep, still like it.
2. World Cup 2010 – Was I stoked for World Cup 2006? No, I was on the “meh” level, but being in Marseilles and going to local pubs to watch games and then watching the French go ballistic after the Brazil/France (quarterfinal?) was awesome. So this time around, I have the infectious enthusiasm of my coworkers and a few work projects that are related, so yeah, excited for World Cup 2010? Definitely! Come on, it’s stuff white people like.
3. Häagen-Dazs Five Ice Cream – Ginger – “It tastes like ginger” Yum.
4. window gardening – I got a late start at my community garden spot, because of my move, so I started 2 small planters on my balcony that I moved to my windows after the move (arugula, basil, mint, and 1 strawberry plant). The basil died, and my kitteh is making great time on eating the arugula. Which inspired the Arugula Pecorino Pizza before it’s all gone.
5. She & Him – I won tickets to the She & Him show in Bend on Memorial Day. le sigh! Volume I & II. So good.
6. iPhone4 - I can haz? birthday coming up, yes.
7. Mumford & Sons – Rather obsessed with these fellows of late. Also, you can listen to the entire album for free on [gasp] MySpace. And if you weren’t already in love with them…
8. Gap linen shorts – You know how some people say you shouldn’t buy a ton of the same thing in different colors? Dude. Those people obviously don’t have issues finding shorts that a. fit in the waist b. fit in the butt c. are tight enough around the leg. So, I bought green, blue, and white. I did put the yellow and pink ones back… for another time?
9. Pink Gin Fizz – not a big fan of sweet drinks, but I can get behind sweet/sour. Shortcut: Grapefruit Izze + oj + gin= tasty.
10. Oregon coast – I spent some time napping in the sand dunes and sunshine last weekend. <3
