Best Portland Breweries: Map & List of ALL 70+ Still Open in 2024

September 7, 2021

Last Updated:

I keep a running list of all the breweries in Portland and which ones I still have to visit. The list is constantly growing as new breweries open and close. Here’s how you can track your own quest to visit all the breweries in Portland, Oregon. So here’s my Portland Beer list, freshly updated for 2023. Including: ALL the currently operating Portland breweries & map, the best breweries in Portland (as-if), Portland breweries that have closed down for good, and a short list of nearby metro area breweries that don’t technically make the cut as a Portland brewery, but worth a mention. Enjoy!

5 Best Breweries in Portland:

What kind of person writes a list called the 5 best breweries? Obviously, this list is highly opinionated and good luck getting anyone in Portland, or anywhere, to agree on the top 5 breweries. So think of this list is kind of top 5 if you’re new to Portland beer. You clearly can’t visit all 60+ breweries, so here are a few of my favs for Portland visitors and why.

  1. Breakside – Going strong for over a decade. They’re known for their IPAs and barrel-aged beers, have expanded into a regional brewery with 4 locations, and are known for solid innovative beers and bringing home ALL the beer awards to prove it.
  2. Great Notion – Still the newer kid on the block, Great Notion made a name for themselves with juicy / hazy IPAs and now make all kinds of wild beer that is like dessert in liquid form. And each can’s design is like artwork on its own. They’re just plain fun and have a bit of a fan club following.
  3. McMenamins – It may not be your favorite beer, but the history of McMenamins in the NW is legendary! And other than Widmer, they’re the only brewery still standing 30 years later. Gotta respect that.
  4. Migration – Migration is one of those breweries routinely left off best of lists. What started as a neighborhood brewery a decade ago, has now expanded to several locations and they’re still making solid beer and their locations have that local neighborhood feel.
  5. Upright Brewing – what started as basement-level Belgian-style farmhouse ales – (open before Blazers games!), has now moved into a new taproom on the street level, and making all different styles of beer. See it’s impossible to list just five, and with that, keep reading for the full list of Portland breweries!
  6. RIP: Hair of the Dog (closed 2022) – If you’re not immersed in the beer world, Hair of the Dog is notable for their creative and strong beers, and have been brewing since the early 90s. So while they have a huge following, they still fly a bit under the radar for some beer drinkers.
